  • Georgia DNR - restructuring of state parks and historic sites

ATLANTA, May 27, 2009 ~~ The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced a restructuring of state parks and historic sites as a result of a nearly 39% reduction in state appropriations and 24% projected loss of revenue. Reorganization will include:

    · Reducing services and access at five state parks.

    · Reducing operational days and/or pursuing community support at 12 state historic sites.

    · Eliminating 12% of the workforce and implementing furloughs.

    · Increasing fees for accommodations, recreational activities, interpretive programs and parking.

    · Pursuing alternative operation of lodges and golf courses.

    · Limiting swimming pool operations.

“These decisions were heart-wrenching but were made using a business case analysis,” said DNR Commissioner Chris Clark. “We are exploring every avenue to manage budget reductions and revenue shortfalls, to properly care for our state parks and historic sites, and to minimize the impact on Georgia citizens and communities.”

The reorganization enables the agency to uphold its mission of protecting Georgia’s natural and cultural resources while also providing opportunities for recreation and education. The DNR is aggressively exploring ways for state parks, historic sites, golf courses and lodges to become more self-sustaining, while exploring opportunities for private operations of lodges and golf courses.

“Outsourcing agreements will be used only if they maintain affordable and high-quality services that are more cost-effective than our own operations,” said State Parks & Historic Sites Director Becky Kelley. “If outsourcing agreements are not possible, if our efforts do not reduce our dependence on state appropriations, or if state revenues continue to decline, further cuts and potential closures of lodges and golf courses are possible.”

Thanks for the great news about your whereabouts, sad though to read that jobs will be lost at DNR and that fees are going up just the same. Thanks for posting this...

Georgia has been hit very hard by the flagging economy. They are already cutting teacher positions and furloughing those remaining.
We here in neighboring Florida feel this crunch too - many OPS (temporary) employees have been cut from both the park sytems and the education departments. We have also seen camp and park fees dramatically jumping.

        Tough times, brudda! :o

It need not be, but parks/recreation/police/fire cuts are much more visible than the legions of cubicle hamsters. It's called the "Washington Monument Syndrome". Many parks are closed in California as a result, schools get more deferred maintenance and skeleton-crew caretakers, but administrators make small reductions in the rate of growth and call them "cuts" while they keep hiring and growing...laughable if it wasn't so stupid!
“People have such a love for the truth that when they happen to love something else, they want it to be the truth; and because they do not wish to be proven wrong, they refuse to be shown their mistake. And so, they end up hating the truth for the sake of the object which they have come to love instead of the truth.”

You are correct. Most folks have the attention span of a gnat, so it's easy for the government to cut front-line services and let the folks scream about it. Then the government tells them that they need more tax $$$ to bring the services back.

The government is not unlike the mobs of old going around the neighborhoods for protection money. You never knew you needed the protection until you didn't pay up.
"Why is it inflationary if the people keep their own money and spend it the way they want to and it's not inflationary if the government takes it and spends it the way it wants to?"
