Stayed here over Labor Day 2013, I was skeptical at first they got slammed by some people on TripAdvisor for various things.
The name of the place says it all, don't come here with 20 college guys or a biker gang and start a keg party. That does not mean you can't have adult fun.
We showed up Friday afternoon, pulled into a line of cars checking in, they had several ADULT staff members with clipboards and all the registrations ready to go, did it all curbside, never stepped out of my car, got my schedule, rules and gate card and drove directly to my site. Great first impression.
The ride to the site was a little confusing, but using the map and the bathhouse as a point of reference we got there, we had a large site with 1/2 sun exposure but a tall stand of pines for shade, it seemed the the whole camp was mostly that way. Not a dank forest, but a shaded treed area, not much gr**** but fine for camping.
We had 3 sites in the same area for a family group, there is a river that has easy access and a nice slow ride, great in a tube or small raft, no rapids or waterfalls through the camp area I saw. I went down the river at least 6 times each trip taking about 20 minutes or more depending on my paddling rate.
They run ample games for the kids, steal the bacon, scavenger hunts and all the jazz. There were movies and animals shows, nothing over the top but kept the little ones attention. There were two pools, one had a giant water slide that was always packed, the slide is worth dealing with the crowd. We spent more time swimming and hot tubbing at the other larger pool to avoid the crowds in the evenings. There was a small pond there with a man made dam kids were always fishing in but I did not see much catching.
Laundry on site, ample store, plenty of staff milling around for directions or general info, bathhouses were a little dated but were cleaned regularly and water stayed warm for my showers.
The big thing they got slammed on TripAdvisor is Security and Quiet Hours. We had about 8 adults getting a little loud around 11:05, that's 5 minutes after quiet, a staff member approached our site and asked us to quiet down and talked casually for a minute or two, we kept it down while the fire died down and hit the hay. There was no final warning, no flashlights blinding people, no black ops sneak attacks, just a friendly request and we obliged, as the rules stated.
If you ever stay at Flat Rock Bridge Family Camping, be sure to visit the guy selling camp wood up the street by the gas station and ice cream stand, he's got a dog that can do some pretty darn good tricks and you will meet a few real MAINERS....
