I've been reading and these little critters sound unstoppable. I'm wondering, are there any areas of New England where black fly season will have already come & gone by mid-June? Or is this pretty much a scourge until July?

Ben's is your friend, along with a head net. This is one reason, I avoid New England until Fall. Been there at different seasons and find the falls the best in temperature, scenery and bugs. Nothing like the autumn leaves changing in NE.
