What a beautiful area! 5 h north of Buffalo, Ny is this astounding Provincial Park...Well worth the drive to experience this beautiful wilderness. We stayed at Canisbay Lake (tent camping) in August. I understand there can be a black fly problem in June/ July. Our rented canoes were delivered to the beach a short walk from our site. No motor boat allowed on this lake, the quiet was awesome. Heard the wolves howl at night, and there were plenty of moose sightings.
Highly recommended for ther real nature lover.

    Howdy,

In the late sixties I was up in Algonquin Provincial Park with a church backpacking teenage social group from Las Vegas. It took us five days of bus travel just to get there. Our leaders had rented canoes and we then spent another five days and four nights portaging and canoeing almost sixty miles of wilderness. I remember it like it was yesterday. The flies and mosquitoes we were told were trained in Alaska before they flew there, yeh right! But man, they were huge compared to anything in the lower 48. Fishing was excellent, wolves howling another and the count of moose was in the hundreds. Not a person anywhere else to be seen except our little good church group. I've never been back, wish I could, but those days bring back many fond memories!

Have done two week long trips in Algonquins backcountry. Once in '87 and again in '09. Great experiences both times.

Algonquin is magic. A remote wilderness and yet it is rich in history. There are old portages, like the Church portage, that was establish by the fur traders. It is marked by a Church hatchet mark in the trees. There are lots of remnants of the logging baron days.

Too bad you went during fly season. Cold pleasant days in the spring and fall keep them away and the heat of the summer kills them all off particularly when it is dry. If you want to read about my journeys through the park please have a look at my Algonquin Park journals.
