Anyone have experience with renting camping equipment?

I wanting to buy some new equipment but I'm worried about getting tents that I'm not happy with. I'm looking at the idea of renting to get a feel for some different tents reliability in withstanding constant rain and windy rain.

Anyone rent before? How did it go?

I haven't rented but it seems logical. I will also say that I believe most serious camping stores (rei, cabellas, bass pro, etc) are willing to take back a tent that has only been used once or twice. Check to make sure but that might also be a way to go.
