I usually just get the cheap ones from Home Depot but they can get hot and heavy on my head. I don't know if other ones are better about this.

But I have a question. Is this just for lighting your tent? Because I bought an led light off amazon that plugs into a small external battery via a usb port that I use for lighting my tent. It even has a switch in the cord that makes it easy to turn on and off. Only $11

      Hello and welcome Jmoody.
Ive bought equipment for multiple types of camping: car, RVing and back packing
What seemed to work best for all applications for me is this:

Keep your eyes open around the 'net and you'll find it for less money.

I have a Princeton tec sync and black diamond storm, the sync has a dial switch which I find easier to operate and at 90 lumens is bright enough for around camp and it has a red light option which is great when you don't want bugs flying at you and don't want to blind anyone lol. The Storm has more lumens and I use it for jogging at night and it also has the red option. I bought these two bc outdoor gear lab did a test and they had the longest battery life on their tests

Princeton Tec Remix. 4 brightness levels, less complicated click progressions than some of the higher end headlamps I've tried.

I use very similar...I have a BD Storm...my wife and son use BD Spots. The button progression isn't too big a deal once you've used it for a bit. Good spot beam...even better flood beam (which I use most often). Like the red light option (wish it was a tad brighter). Both have "swipe" to max---One side of the lamp has a touch sensitive pad....swipe it with a finger and it goes to max lumens...swipe again and it returns to the previous lumen level. Perhaps the best is the "Lockout" button, which keeps it from accidently turning on in your pack should something press against the on/off button. If your headlamp does not have this and has an easily pushed on/off button...it might be beneficial to remove the batteries until needed. A headlamp that is on in your backpack all during the day is not going to be worth much at night.

Link to the above referenced Outdoor Gear Lab tests on headlamps. Testing is a year old....so be aware, sometimes when a mfgr updates a model they can really screw it up and the item doesn't perform the same. I always think of these tests as "helpful" research, but not the end all be all. But good to get some ideas on available features, etc:

This is a great idea! Actually, I use a cheap $11 dollar headlamp to read books when in the backyard at night or when doing work around the house, works great, never thought of taking it along on the next camping trip but now I will.

I like the Petzl E+ , it weighs about an ounce. If that is not a concern, then indulge yourself! Rayovac makes a good one, and cheap. I only camp with either a headlamp or a candle lantern. I do have a few of those blowtorch Coleman lanterns, but being something of a stargazer I don't tend to use them these days.

                  Zebralight.

You can choose from various beam profiles (flood for example) and tone color (neutral vs cool). The 600F will give you over 1200 lumens for 2 hours, 349 lumens for 4.3 hours, 68 lumens for 33 hours or 3.7 lumens (tent use) for 18 days. There are lots of reviews on Candlepowerforums.com (best flashlight forum on internet) and Youtube.
