  • How do I remove tree sap from fly?

Had my first camping trip with my 2016 Big Agnes Tensleep 6 Memorial Day. Tent held up well with one night of rain with no leaks. However, maple tree sap got on everything & especially the rain fly. How do I safely remove this from my brand new tent/fly. Just makes me sick.
Hope to camp in my new Columbia Fall River 8 Instant Tent in 2017

Bump for replies-maybe someone here can help. I feel sick for you CampinLady. That's a fine tent.

Never had to remove sap. I did some quick internet searches and found....a bunch of different "solutions". Naptha (Coleman white gas), Goo gone, etc. I hate to even recommend something since I have zero experience on this and would hate to cause further damage if it's not done correctly. Have you tried calling Big Agnes for their recommendation?

I haven't dealt with tree sap either. Some things work well to freeze off (gum, etc.), others work well to heat off (adhesive). Not sure with tree sap - maybe freeze it off? Then maybe it would just crack apart?

Everything I've ever used for sap would probably be worse for the tent than the sap is. I'd echo hoosier and recommend that you get a hold of Big Agnes. They're going to know best what chemicals are safe to use on their tents and what isn't. Good luck. Let us know what you end up doing and how it works out.

Echoing hoosier's advice and asking you to come back and let us know what they say so we'll all add to our knowledge base.
Yes but please don't "get sick over the sap"; it's just nature stuff after all:yes:
Glad to hear the tent did it's job well otherwise.........but wait it DID do it's job fully otherwise the sap would have been on yer heads:glasses:.

Re: How do I remove tree sap from fly?

Thank you so much everyone for sharing my pain. I did contact REI where I purchased the tent & they rec nondetergent soap. I did pick up a tent cleaner/waterproof kit at a local sporting goods store, but I am going to do as suggested - contact Big Agnes. I will keep you updated.

I always use hand sanitizer on my tents and fabric chairs.

The hardest to get sap off was my Coleman rubbery shower bag we hung from a pine tree for hand washing. Ended up freezing it and using baby powder on what did not come off.

Re: How do I remove tree sap from fly?

I wanted to update on the results. I contacted Big Agnes, the manufacturer of my tent, & they recommended I purchase Nikwax Tech Wash. I washed my fly in my front loading washing machine, & my fly looks like new again! I am SO relieved & elated! I was very nervous washing the fly in a washing machine let me tell you. (Only front load rec.) The Nikwax was about $10 which will give me several washes of items that it is made for. I am especially relieved that everything worked out as I leave for camping with my son & DIL today. Have a fun, safe holiday everyone!

Have a wonderful camping trip and so glad everything turned out. I'm curious since I'm unfamiliar with big agnes tents but is the fly as waterproof as before or does it need waterproofed after washing?

Hmmmm....I would have rubbed some dirt on it and called it character.

LOL I think the rain fly will naturally gather all types of elements to add character in no time.
