  • Looking for my first tent

I'm looking for my first tent. We would be camping in the summer months here in Ohio. WE would be camping in the camp grounds. It would be Me , My G.F. and Her 4 year old, so I'm thinking 4-6 man tent. Something of good quality and under $300.00. It could be Dome or the Cabin type. An easy set up would be a plus. thanks

I think any of the quality brand 4 to 6 man tents would be fine -- REI, Marmot, Sierra Designs, North Face, Kelty, etc. etc. I would look for one with aluminum poles.

Personally, I think 4 person tents make great tents for two people. With a toddler, I'd probably try to stretch for a 6P. You could certainly all fit in an 8 x 8 four-man tent, but it's amazing how stuff expands to fill the space and it's nice to be be crammed right up against the side of the tent.

If you can swing $336, these guys have the Marmot 6P on sale. It is a high quality affordable car camping family tent. Thick 12mm aluminum poles, two doors, two vestibules. Heavier than average floor. Good ventilation.

The 4P will be smaller with only one door, but with the same poles and less size, will be a bit sturdier in heavy weather. I got this for my daughter for XMAS and was very impressed.

Marmot tents (at a given price point) comparable quality to the other brands I mentioned. These are the kinds of tents that will be fully weather proof and, with reasonable care, last for years of 3 season camping.

I have a limelight 3p. Only drawback to my 3p is that I can't stand up in it. Kind of makes it a pain when changing clothes. Other than that it is a great tent and well priced.

Eastern Mountain Sports has the Big Agnes Big House 6 on sale right now for $295.96 with free shipping. I've seen them set up at the local REI and I was tempted to grab one myself (until I looked at my bank balance). NICE tent!
