  • Ticla tents?

Just wondering if anyone is using Ticla tents? Kind of looking at the Tortuga 3. Been wanting a new tent for awhile, Just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Thought I wanted--And still do--a Marmont Limelight 4 but the Tortuga Kind of caught my eye. Give me your thoughts.
    Thanks

The big difference is that the Tortuga doesn't have a full coverage rain fly. That would be OK in a warm dry climate, but would probably be a deal killer in a place where it might rain hard while you are camping or if you will be camping in cold weather (the waterproof coated main tent body is going to be prone to condensation like crazy with the mesh being the only breathable part of the tent. Basically, this looks like a really nice version of the standard Coleman partial fly tent -- the kind of tent that people end up pitching under a blue tarp.

I have a Limelight 2 and I gave a Limestone 4 to my daughter for Christmas (and had it set up to get it all configured with guy lines and so forth). I'm very impressed with both of them. Can't find anything to complain about. The Limelight series is a bit lighter. The Limestone series is a bit heavier -- thicker aluminum poles, heavier floor, etc.

The opposite doors on the Limelight 4 would give you the open ventilation effect of the Ticla if you left the vestibule doors open (they tie back), which still being able to fully close the tent up for bad weather.

The setup videos are a good way to really see the differences:

These guys have the Limelight 4P for $276, including a footprint and gear loft. They've got it in the orange or the green:

They've also got the Limestone 4P for $253. That includes the doormat, but the footprint would be extra $50.

These guys also have some excellent prices.

They've got the Limelight 4 for $269 (no free shipping).

They've got Marmot's best 4P 3-season tent, the Halo 4, for $339 with free shipping. It is an awesome tent. Double doors, double vestibules. Crazy strong

And they've got the Limestone 6 for $379 with free shipping.

I really like the halo 4......I am just a little cheap for it. If I had the extra $$$$ that is what I would have.

            Re: Ticla tents?

The Halo, Limestone, and Limelight 4P tents are all the same quality. Same fabrics, same fly materials.

The Halo is a 3+ season tent. Very strong due to the pole configuration. The Limestone is close. It uses the same the same 12mm poles, and a little heavier floor. Biggest downside is only one door -- although there is a significant covered vent on the backside of the tent.

The Limelight has lighter 9mm poles (standard backpacking tent aluminum poles), but two doors. All three have the same basic dome configuration and secondary poles to pull the sides out for more vertical walls. For hotter weather, the Limelight is probably going to ventilate a bit better than the Limestone, if you open up both vestibules to get some cross ventilation.

              Re: Ticla tents?

Guess I'll throw another tent in the mix. Now just four dollars more than the Tortuga 3, REI has reduced the price on the Big Agnes Big House 6. I've seen one set up in one of the local stores here and, before I decided to go to canvas, was seriously considering it - even before the price drop. As it is now, that's a lot of tent for the money. Still not a full rain fly tent, but I've always put tarps over my nylon tents, so that wasn't an issue for me.

I would have a hard time without a real vestibule. Being able to put my shoes (and other stuff) outside the tent and still keep it dry is a pretty good feature.

                  Re: Ticla tents?

Thanks everyone. Here in Ca. rain is not a problem most of the time. Vestibules look like kind of a pain to me. I don't need 2 doors as it is just me and my dog. It is fun looking at tents. I will find the right one someday....LOL

If you don't need/want two doors, then the Limestone 4 is a killer car camping tent. Very strong, durable. Huge inside. Good ventilation. I was really impressed when I had it set up in the basement with a Christmas bow on it!
