  • Rainflys

Since I just started back to tent camping I have a question about rainflys. Would,nt a full coverage rainfly be hot camping in the heat. All my camping is done in SC during the fall and spring, but I would think a full rainfly would cut down on air movement. Please educate me on this as I'm in the market for a new tent. Thanks

Yes. A full rainfly will cut down on airflow through the tent. To mitigate, look for fly that provides some overhang coverage when the doors are unzipped. Or one with roof vents. Pulling the bottom of the fly out with guylines also helps.

On the flip side, a full rain fly will keep rain out.

You can also put up a tarp over the tent a ways, to keep the rain off but allow for plenty of ventilation.

Yep. We have a tent where we can put the rainfly up/back as much as we would like. But, we also camp in places where rain likes to pop up without warning (ie, Florida panhandle).

So we leave the vestibule open, the door as a screen, and a box fan.
