  • First time Hike Camping. Would love some tips!

Hi everyone, i am going on a 2 day one night camping trip that i will be hiking around 2 miles up a river until we get to a spot we would like. I'm going to be going with one or two of my friends that also have very little camping experience. I plan on purchasing this package on amazon http://www.amazon.com/2-0-Bug-Surviv...A3BZZHUJ692B7K

it comes with practically everything i would need for a night or two minus the tent. i was wondering, after looking at the list of items it comes with, what else i should be taking with me?

also some tips for that alcoholic stove would be great!

ill definitely have more questions so stay tuned haha

Well it certainly looks like a deal but I do wonder what the sleeping bag's and backpack's specs are since the website doesn't say. Normally, when somone has narrowed down their choice I don't question it but a sleeping bag is your most important piece of gear on a stripped back hiking trip, followed closely by the backpack IMO.

Aug 2 to Aug 14- adult trip to recover from kiddos' outing. Bring on the Campari!

The only thing that stood out to me was the vagueness of the sleeping bag like NYCgrrl said. But that should be easy to find out from the seller.

Not sure if it's the same:

Seems like mixed reviews. You don't want to make your camping experience a negative one. Especially when your first starting out. Being uncomfortable sleeping can ruin a weekend. Read up on it and make an educated decision. See ya on the trail.

Good luck. I've never seen packages like that before. Very complete.

        Enjoy,

No specific tips, except--take something for writing. It's your first trip, make a list of anything you DIDN'T use, and anything you WISHED you had. These things vary person by person, so it's hard to give a die-hard "you must have XYZ" list to anyone.

And, if I may let police training slip into camping: 2 is 1, 1 is none. Take two flashlights (and anything else that is of dire importance, take two.)

            Hey JLister,
Good plan to go camping/hiking! Personally I think that you should consider to buy your stuff separately. I think the price won't have to come out higher if you do some searches here and there (which you probably already did). If I can give you a personal experience/advise I would recommend to get some kind of insect killer in case it's an area with mosquitoes. If don't sleep well then hiking can be exhausting

Sunnymw hit it on the head. If you plan on getting "into" backpacking, the "advice" your looking for is you thoughts on the trail and at camp. Lots of times, the trip is overshadowed by the ultimate goal of your hike, and its easy to forget when you get home the details. Keep the paper and pencil small though. My advice to a first timer is to decide what your goal is. Is it to hike a certain trail that you will sleep on the way, or is it to reach a destination and spend time in one spot. Is it to be a part of nature and experience the flow, or is it to push your body to the limits in pursuit of the ultimate high.

either way, specific gear advice at this stage from people who do not know you may prove to satisfy your short term desires, but as for long term gear, its up to you and your own personal journey.

Looks like you got yourself a good deal. Make sure though that the sleeping bag’s going to keep you warm. Outdoor camping can get pretty cold at night. In any case, why don’t you check out http://thecampingtrail.net/category/tips/safety-tips/ they usually have a lot of good tips especially for first-time campers.
