  • Old sock tent stakes

Here is a use for old socks that will appeal to the winter campers.

Driving tent stakes into frozen ground is do-able, but getting the stakes OUT of the frozen ground is often NOT do-able.

Next time you go winter camping with temps well below freezing, bring old socks as a substitute for stakes.

At camp, fill the socks with snow or debri. Tie a line to the socks and then a line to your guy lines (you will probably have to cut the sock line, so don't attach the socks directly to your guy lines and peg loops.

Place the sock into the position a if it were a tent stake and pour cold water on it, then cover it with snow or, lacking snow, debris.

The socks will freeze into place. to get the socks out, bash them about with your boot or tool, pour water on it, and it should come right up. If you are really in a pinch, you can just cut the line that holds sock to the guy line or peg loops.

This is a LOT easier than trying to remove a tent stake frozen deep into the ground.

Excellent tip. Very simple too and that's always helpful.
