Was wondering if anybody had any good ideas or suggestions on what to use to tie down tarps and overhangs when there aren't any trees around? I like to put a tarp over my tent and I'm going to be camping on an improved tent site and there aren't any trees close by that I can tie it too. Anybody use an impromptu pole or something that you can stick in the ground that is strong and sturdy enough? Thanks for any ideas!

the eight post is a picture of using poles to support a tarp. You only need two poles to suspend the tarp.

Re: No trees. How to tie stuff down?
Tried replying before but I don't think it went through. Anyway, I bought some gutter spikes and 8' 2x2's at Home Depot and cut them in half. On 4 of the 4' pieces I drilled holes in each end and epoxied the gutter spikes into one end and left the hole on the other end. On 4 more pieces, I drilled one end and epoxied the gutter spikes in and put a large eye screw on the other end. I cut off all of the heads of the gutter spikes and cut the length of the ones on the piece with the eye screw such that they would fit into the hole on the other piece with the gutter spike. Basically, I made an 8' pole with a gutter spike on the bottom for sticking into the ground, an eye screw at the top for the tarp grommet and guy ropes, and a hole/spike joint in the middle to break them down for transport. Crude but effective. Run your guy rope so you have half of it out each end of your eye screw and tie it. Stake each end of the rope to the ground at about 90 degrees to each other so each rope is parallel to one side of the tarp. You can put one at each corner and one in the middle of opposite sides. I made 8 of these but usually only use 4-6 of them. Hope this gives you some ideas.
