Just happened to bump into my old thread and I see there's a question. Still loving the Cabela's Alaskan Guide by the way...
The pictures with the sandy beach were taken in Stillwater Reservoir somewhere in the southern end.

I'm familiar with Forked Lake too. Last September some friends and I paddled from Old Forge to Saranac Lake over the course of about 5 days. I remember going through Forked one evening. Big rocks inches under the water over by the boat launch. We ended up camping at a lean-to just east of there after having come through Eighth lake & Raquette Lake.

By the way... when not camping with the family, I've really come to enjoy sleeping in the hammock! Very comfy and light weight. The down underquilt made the frosty september nights bearable.
