New to forum .., questions about repairing camper tent

My parents gave me their old '89 Coleman popup camper. Last weekend I was lowering the camper top and pushing the rear tent in, when the rail that holds the tent to the roof began to come loose. It appears that whatever material (I assume wood) that lies behind the cover is rotted/disintegrated, probably due to a leak.

I'd like to know how I should proceed to repair this. Can anyone help? I'm a DIYer, but this is a bit new to me and I'd rather not take it to a camper shop if I can help it.

If you are a DIYer, then you know that a lot of repairs like the one you described starts with taking the unit apart.

P.S. Take photos and sketches as you take it apart.
