  • New Years Eve

Among the various superstitions surrounding the advent of the New Year is the nearly mandatory practice of noisemaking at midnight on New Year’s Eve. Now looked upon as mere revelry, it once was considered protection against evil spirits, who would be scared off by all of the noise.

Out here in the Deep South boondocks, the local Rednecks have their loud and boisterous Bon Fire Parties, with fireworks and sometimes shooting guns in the air. Reckon it comes from our early Celtic roots......

The only Evil Spirits come out of bottles..... :D

It turned out better than I thought. They kept the music down to a tolerable level, and with my bedside radio on full and my ear plugs in, I heard only the occasional "thump!" from the incoming mortars.......
No smoke in the air this morning, so I guess nothing burned last night.
