December 21, 1968. Apollo 8 launch. On this flight, the crew of Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders became the first humans to orbit the Moon. While in lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, the crew delivered to a world audience a moving TV broadcast in which they read from the Book of Genesis. Besides being the first to see the far side of the Moon, the three astronauts also were the first to see Earth rising over the lunar surface. Captured on camera, this image has become one of the iconic photographs of the twentieth century.

Apollo 8's success paved the way for Apollo 11, the first human landing on the Moon.

The Apollo 8 astronauts recently spoke at the Museum; the archived webcast is available online.
