  • Stage 2 Fire Restrictions

Heading to northern new mexico and they are under stage 2 fire restrictions. Can currently use our camp stove but no campfires allowed. The drought is pretty severe and some other forests in the area have closed. Getting worried they may close where we are headed.

Going east has beautiful places but the idea is to get up in elevation to stay cool and bug free. Any other suggestions?

I am in Arizona and stage 2 is a yearly thing. We have just started the monsoon season so hopefully they will be lifted in a month or so.

We've been to the Red River NM area a few times and never had a stage 2 so am bummed that campfires are not allowed. If it stays like that, it'll be fine since we can use the stove but a fire is a big part of the fun. The kids enjoy sitting around a fire at night, roasting marshmallows and starbursts. Oh well, we will still enjoy ourselves. From what I read now, I don't think they'll close Carson Nat'l Forest so it'll be fine. Just got worried initially since I saw that Sante Fe Nat'l and Cimarron were closed, both those not far from where we're headed.

In Oklahoma, it's been really dry here as well. Typically our spring is pretty wet, lots of storms, but we didn't get much. Now summer is here so there's not much hope until fall.

Well, they actually closed the forest and shortened our camping. Someone started another fire, they think a cigarette, and burned about 100 acres. Luckily that's all that burned. It was so extremely dry, unlike what we had seen before. Oh well, ended up spending a couple days in a hotel so the kids still had fun, got to swim so they were happy.

Glad you were able to salvage the trip.

These fires are terrible regardless of cause. But when I find out a careless person caused it, it just tears me up inside.

People please THINK before you DO.

You could head REAL east and come to Maryland where half of each park is closed due to the opposite problem - flooding. It doesn't matter if it's fire, wind or water - Nature doesn't play around.

We are big fans of the Smoky Mountains so maybe one day we'll be able to camp there.
