  • Dispersed Camp sites, MN, WI, MI with river\lake car accessibility.

So, I'm new here, but not new to camping. I have a pile of vacation to burn through (240 hours) and I'd like to get away. I'm not looking for a public camp site where there's tons of people around, in fact I'd like to be totally alone.

I'd like to be able to pull my truck up (can't carry a 100lb cooler) and pitch a tent next to a river or lake to do some fishing. I don't need any amenities or conveniences.

I haven't been able to find a location that would allow this. Anyone here know a spot that would fit these needs? Doesn't need to be free.

There is a place in northern Minnesota I really like. It is more of a resort with some cabins and RV spots and a few tent spots. Usually this time of year it is pretty quiet. Really beautiful area. Can't guarantee you will be completely alone though. Sorry... If you want the website it's http://www.sleepingfawnresort.com/.

Good luck though with your search!

Something you may want to consider is the Boundary Waters in northern MN. If you aren't familiar, it is a wilderness area that can only be accessed by canoe. Might not work with one man and 100 lbs of gear. But you may still want to consider. There are plenty of outfitters that can set you up. The beauty of the Boundary Waters(besides the natural beauty) is that once you are in, you don't hear any manmade sounds. We were up there for a week, and the only thing I heard that wasn't nature, was one jet flying at cruising altitude one night. That was it, no cars, boat motors, Harleys, loud music, irritating drunk people, etc. Every other sound all week was nature. When you are portaging, you will occasionally come across some people, but once you are at a camp site, you won't see or hear anyone. I take that back, you may see an occasional canoe out on the lake a mile away, but that's about it. There are tons of websites out there that can provide lots of info. If you want to get away from it all, that's the place to do it.

If you live in or near WISCONSIN, your prayers are answered. There are many state and national campgrounds that have campsites right next to rivers and lakes. They are too numerous to mention. Wisconsin has 15,000 lakes and more than 80,000 miles of rivers, so it is no surprise that waterfront campsites are abundant.

The short-cut is to call the state or federal park services and tell them what you are looking for. They will give you some suggestions. Of course, you can noodle around on the internet too, and look for campground maps, but that is time consuming

If you are looking specifically for dispersed camping, Chequomegon Nicolet National Forest has several, but you need to check with the ranger station for updates and suggestions. The dispersed primitive sites can be hidden treasures by rivers or lakes or sometimes they just suck and are nothing more than a clearing in a mosquito infested field. You have to ask the rangers or locals for help.
