The latest camping games thread I found was from 2 or so years ago. I figured times have changed a little since then and so have some of the games we play. I like the idea of scavenger hunts and such for the little ones (especially the greased watermelon thing!) but I was gearing this more towards games for "adults" or older children that involve coordination and a healthy level of competition (and maybe a little bit of drinking) Any suggestions? What do you play?
I really enjoy playing cornhole. (no, not the version you play in prison) The best part is you can make everything you need at home for fairly cheap. I'm all for DIY projects. If you're not familiar with it here's a link.
Ladder ball is also pretty sweet, but I haven't really played much.
I play disc golf from time to time and Innova makes a travel basket and even mini baskets and discs that I think could be a blast on camping trips. A little pricey, but fun nonetheless. I think wham-o makes cheaper plastic versions of the mini baskets.
The newest thing I have discovered is Beersby. This is the game I really wanted to talk about. It is a little more complicated, but the set up is super easy to make and cheap too! (around $20) 2 poles (PVC, ABS etc) , 2 frisbees, 2 empty beer bottles, and 4 people.
There are several variations of play and one of my favorite rules is each player has to have a drink in one hand or you get penalized! In an effort not to bore you with half an hour of reading in this post, I'll just post the link, it explains everything better than I could. You can read all of the rules, see pictures, and check out diagrams of the set up here.
I did notice on my last camping trip that the entire campsite was gravel. So getting your beersby poles into the ground would be close to impossible. (Mine are cut at 45 degree angles at the bottom to make it easier to pound into the ground) I used large tomato sauce cans and concrete to make removable stands just in case of something like this. I poured the concrete around scrap pieces of 2" PVC to make my slots for the actual beersby poles. Then all you need is flat ground and you're good to go.
I was wondering if there were any other "hidden gem" type games like beersby and cornhole that maybe you play and we haven't heard of yet? I only recently heard of beersby for the first time and apparently it's pretty popular. Even something silly that you just do for fun in the backyard from time to time? :p
*No underage drinking of course! Anyone under the age of 21 can play with soda or juice. And try to drink responsibly, we don't want any loud stumbling drunks in the campgrounds.
