    How much frozen water to take

    Going on the first trip of the year next weekend and was thinking of freezing water in 1 gallon jugs and 2 liter bottles. For cooling purposes only, how much frozen water should I take in each cooler? 2 seperate coolers, 1 for drinks, 1 for food. They are the Coleman Extreme coolers 50 Quart type. The temps will be in the mid 70's for a high, mid 40's for a low. I will be taking 5 gallons for cleaning, cooking etc as well. I just want to know (ball park) how much to take for each cooler.
    I will be pre-cooling all cooler items before trip. And I will have frozen pre-cooked hamburger and sausage in the food cooler as well. If I left out any other important let me know and I will respond.

    I generally fill 25% of the cooler with a combo of block ice and cubes. It lasts 3 days in my bug marine cooler seen here.

    this may also answer the still disputed Drain vs Keep the water debate. Though not likely...

      Those are GREAT coolers! Unless you plan on drinking the meltwater from your jugs, make the block ice in plastic tupperware-type containers, take the ice out of the containers and use it in your cooler. Drain the meltwater using the cooler drain valve (that's what it's there for) periodically to make your ice last longer, i.e.; keep your drinks and food colder longer. The advantage of ice inside of jugs is that although the ice melts faster, you can drink the water if you want to. AFA the "debate" about drain vs. keep, there is no debate, only denial, that is unless you're operating outside of the laws of science, like inside of a cartoon or some alternate universe...Which coold be a cool place to set up a tent under the right circumstances! :cool:

        I will be drinking the melt water. So I should plan for roughly 25% of the space for blocks of ice. I can do math easy enough to figure that out. I like the idea on how to make block ice. Would be even better if the wife hadn't given the chest freezer away.

        BTW EVERYONE, please don't turn this into a "drain or not to drain" debate, please leave suggestions on how much ice I should take.

            Kinquad, I would pack the coolers with what you have already mentioned, then pack the food and see if there is any room. If there is make another block or 1/2 gallon, or quart containers of block or so of ice. It always best to take as much as you can, and that way it fills up your coolers and not leaving too much dead air space. With us having a freezer I always keep a load of gallon, 1/2 gallon, & quart containers of ice pre-made. Good luck, take some pics and share them here when you return!

              More good news from the halls of science: Empty dead air space in closed coolers has the least effect on melting your ice supply and warming up your goodies. It conducts heat the slowest compared to solids and liquids so it's your least concern inside the cooler! May I have another beer? :cool:
