Hello everyone, coming from Colorado here. Can't wait to get to know everyone and share some camping stories. I was pretty much raised in a tent!
No literally when my family moved us out here from Washington DC we lived in a tent the first 3 months we were in Colorado!!

Hi all. I'm Don. Live in the boonies outside Las Vegas, NV. It's HOT out here! Except when it's cool; it gets down to the low twenties in the winter. We have a large trailer that we tow around for a couple months every year. Did you guess we are retired? The trailer is our little mobile condo but we are talking about getting something like a pickup camper or even convert the cap on our pickup for little one or two night jaunts. That trailer is just too big to go lots of places. So I'll be paying special attention when someone is talking about DIY pickup camping. I'm confident I can speak to many trailer issues but not so much on anything else!

              Hi, I'm Matthew,
I'm 35, single father raising my daughter(13) on my own.
              I'm a plumber and amateur photographer(urban exploring).
Have been camping/backpacking/canoeing all my life, so has my daughter.
I camp/backpack all year round, but I'm mostly into backpacking or backcountry now that my daughter is older, but DU(drive up) is fun with groups of family/friends.

Oppps should have posted here first...oh well, better late than never...I "grew up" in primitive camps. There was a lot of time spent with my father, uncle and a dear friend camping, hunting and fishing. In college I took up back packing and whitewater kayaking. After a while I moved to expedition canoeing (i.e. long river trips, boundary waters etc.) I also spent a fair bit of time backpacking in Europe. Then along came a wife etc. and after a number of years of RVing, resort vacations. The RVing was ok, but the rest well..a few months ago a buddy and me were talking about the "old days." Long story short he had never given up tenting so we along with a couple of his friends headed to the high Chihuahuan desert area around Marfa and Fort Davis. It was a great trip and I remembered how much I loved tenting, cooking on open fires, and chillin out around camp. The trip even included a hell bending mountain thunderstorm. I will continue to camp, the wife is just gonna have to get used to the idea. I am good deal older so crawling in and out of tents, sleeping on a thin pad etc. does not sit well my old bones. Add to that a pretty good case of sleep apnea and you won't find packing cross country or in a canoe for an overnighter. I am pretty set on car camping where I can fetch a deep cycle battery for CPAP with relative ease. Since late May I have been out 7 or 8 times tuning up old skills and testing out some new gear. Since weight is not as much of a consideration I have also tested out a nice cot, a couple of different stoves, worked on dutch oven cooking etc. I just finished the first setup of my new Springbar Traveler 5 so this weekend it will get it's baptism somewhere fairly local with the wife. On the 16th of this month I am headed back out to Fort Davis for a little R&R (i.e. peace and quiet) on a 5 or 6 day solo run.

Welcome y'all! Pleased as punch that you have decided to hang out here when you're not camping. The autumn & winter months move a might slower 'round here, but we always welcome honest camping folk! Come spring activity gets a boost from all kinds of questions from just about anyone that is considering camping as a lifestyle or weekend jaunt. Havin a crowd of long term members has always been a plus! Welcome aboard!

Most of the time you won't see me much, I'm just the part sheriff in these parts. Everyday it seems I'm rounding up the would-be spammers and hackers and give 'em the justice they deserve. This is a place of enjoyment for the camper, and hopefully you'll never have to wade through un-wanted spam or links to porn. Just running a clean site is a major task for me!
                  Adios for now! Welcome!!

Welcome to the forum, Riverdog. You'll find us much more hospitable and a good bit more helpful than the commercial alternatives! Also welcome back to tenting, you'll find that those old thin pads of yesteryear are now replaced with thick warm ones that last a lifetime from 2" thick to about 6" with lifetime guarantees. If you go with a cot or air mattress, you might want a Mr. Buddy and a CO detector so you don't freeze outside of summer camping. I'm into high-end polyester gear, but Springbok is regarded as one of the Cadillacs of canvas tents as you know, and make using a heater less of an issue regarding melting the tent wall. You made a good choice in quality gear that will enhance what you're out there for. Again, welcome back to the "real" camping experience!

And so, they end up hating the truth for the sake of the object which they have come to love instead of the truth.”

Hello to all! Cant wait to check out all this forum has to offer. Ive been camping out for 3 years now. Living completely off the grid in a van, or as some may refer to it Van Dwelling. he van has everything I need, and is completely solar powered. Well not the van itself but everything in it. Hoping one day just to throw my belongings into a pack, and see the country. Looking forward to finding out about your experiences.
