      You don't have to go through all that trouble of cutting up a steel can.

      Just use an old frying pan. Put charcoal in the frying pan and put a cookie cooling rack over the top for grilling.

      We have been doing this for a long time for portable picnic grills. When you are done you can easily carry the pan by the handle to the coal pit or wherever you go to dump the ashes.

      It is a lot easier and more convenient than using a cut-up steel can.

          If you use the fry pan grill - or the tin can grill or other home-made grills, be sure to put something underneath the grill if you plan to use it on a picnic table or other burnable base. The bottom of the pan gets very hot and can burn the base underneath. A handful of stones work well for this purpose.
