I wanted to share this website that I like to use. It's basically instructions that people submit on how to do all kinds of things. I did a search for "camping" and there are a lot of interesting ideas on there.http://www.instructables.com/tag/typ...annel-camping/

Re: Camping Instructables
Yeah, I like instructables, and lifehacker.com.
Gotta watch out on some of these...

This guy's home-made tiki torch is actually better known as a "molotov cocktail".
Not something to take camping.Last edited by Shadow; 02-16-2012, 06:13 PM.Nights spent outdoors this year: I lost track

I like the little stove made out of pop cans. Pretty cool idea I think.

Re: Camping Instructables
They're a good idea, but they're not the most reliable. If you make one, make sure you do a lot of testing...burn time, boil time, fuel consumption...etc. You want to test the garbage out of it before you get on the trail. The last place you want to find out that it doesn't work...6 miles in to the back country. Remember, temprature affects boil time. If it's 30 degrees out, it's going to take much longer for your alcohol stove to boil water, than if it's 80 degrees out. The colder it is out side, the more fule you'll consume to boil 1 liter of water.
Happy Trails!

Re: Camping Instructables
What he said. Test the different types, i.e. top burner, side burner, pressurized, open top, etc. They all burn differently and one stove will burn differently with different pots on it. Some you can set the pot on directly. Some need a stand to create a space between stove and pot. You can spend all day online reading about different types.
I have built 2 or three and bought 2 made by someone else. all are different. My favorite will burn well using my Heneken pot but not so well with a wider, flat bottom pot. Another stove does exactly the opposite.
But for size, weight, and weight of fuel, you can't beat them for solo cooking. I can pack my stove, 2 small sqeeze bottles of fuel, Heini-pot with lid, Bic lighter, spoon, collapsable chopsticks, scrub pad, and a few spice packets, all inside a screw top 1.5 liter plastic container.

Re: Camping Instructables
Yeah, I agree. I just thought it was a cool little "trinket" for cooking on. I always test everything I'm taking on a camping trip, even if it's brand new. You gotta' make sure this stuff works or you're gonna have some problems.
Besides I'm basically a big kid and enjoy playing with the stuff I camp with!! lol...

Re: Camping Instructables
What is the model of wood burning stove? I saw one online recently that has a little thermocouple on it to generate electricity. That will power a small fan to fan the flames and make the stove hotter, as well as charge up a cell phone, not that you need one of those in the back country. It was cool but I can't remember the name of it
