  • Coffee Can Cookery Stew

    Howdy,

    Ingredients:
    2 Strips bacon
    1 Med. potato, sliced
    1 Med. onion, sliced
    1 Med. tomato, sliced
    2 Stalks celery
    1/3 lb Ground beef
    1 Carrot
    Salt and pepper to taste
Coffee can and lid(1lb can works best; I tried other sizes but 1 lb can is priceless)!

Directions: Cut carrot in half lengthwise. Cut celery and carrot into 2" lengths. Cut bacon in half. Mold 2 meat patties. Place 2 pieces of bacon on bottom of can. Place layers of all ingredients. Repeat. Place closed coffee can on top of glowing coals for 25 min. Open lid and check after 10 minutes, if browning too rapidly, pour 2 Tbs. of water in can. Takes about 45 minutes, eat! Enjoy!

That is probably what gives the stew it's distinctive flavor

That sounds absolutely awesome! Those kinds of meals really make camping worthwhile, and really are missed in the back country

            Re: Coffee Can Cookery Stew

My deceased grandmother made a lot of things at home in coffee cans like pumpkin bread which she made often. The can holds moisture.

                Sounds tasty!
These days coffee cans come with plastic lids.
Isn't that kind of problematic? Or will it be OK?
I've seen some pretty impressive coffee can cookery (I recollect seeing a wire bail rigged through holes punched in acoffee can) but that was long ago.
