About The Editor

We live in the Colorado, one of the greatest camping locations on earth. My family enjoys camping, fishing and 4 wheeling. We tent camp, car camp and pull a 14ft 1994 Coleman pop-up trailer. Our family loves the outdoors.

About CampingForums

A family in Colorado was looking for a FREE source of good camping information. They also wanted to find a place that they could develop relationships with others who also like to camp. After an endless search of sites, some wanting memberships, others without enough information, they started CampingForums.com. They hope you enjoy it as much as they do.

Chris’ ride for the Lance Armstrong Foundation

picture-1.png Times are tough, I know. When a worthwhile cause comes across my desk I try and pony up.

Every year the girls in my family get together to walk in Denver’s “Race for the Cure”. I think it’s high time the men of the Paulsen family back something just as worthwhile.

Chris is a Jeepin buddy of mine. While I don’t know his background with this disease I think it a pretty worth while cause. He has dedicated his time to race. Let’s back him up.

Heat things up with Vaseline

pocket-flame.pngRub a couple of cotton balls in Vaseline, then store them with some flint and steel. LifeHacker says this makes a great fire starter.

Popular Mechanics says that a cotton ball smeared with Vaseline or ChapStick is “a foolproof fire starter.” The Vaseline works as your fuel, and once you get the Vaseline-soaked cotton ball lit, the flame should continue to burn under pretty much any condition. The Popular Mechanics article is rather light on details, so I also found a post on the Survival and Equipment weblog detailing how to make single-use petroleum jelly candles using cotton balls, petroleum jelly, and aluminum foil. You will, of course, still need a flint or match to get the cotton ball started

Knots made made easy

The Grogono Family in Scotland thinks knot tying is very important. So do I. “Animated Knots by Grog” is a wonderful site showing you how to tie every knot known to man. This site took some work. Each image looks to be a still photo, stitched(punn) together with HTML. The site also offers the knot tying instructions on a DVD for sale.

Whether you a Scout Master, boater or just a camper that uses a lot of knots this is a great bookmark.

The age old art of compass reading

With GPS and all the high end gadgets most of use, the art of compass reading may have been forgotten.

Not in my house.  My oldest boy asked me a few months ago what a compass was.  I pull one out of the closet and gave it to him.  I asked him to figure out which way was east.  At eight years old and never seeing a compass before that was an almost and impossible task.  After trying for a few moments, and just before he was going to give up I helped him.

Do you think you need some help reading compass?  Here is a well written article on how to do it.  The article also touches on a little know way of turning your wrist watch into a compass.  That’s assuming you still were a wrist watch. :)

CampingForums - Forum

No everyone the forum is still up. Active as ever, if you can call it active. :( I just wanted to start blogging about camping. I also wanted to post up some product reviews and this format works great for that.

Do you have a knack for writing? Want to review a product you recently tried? Let me know I would love to get a few more writers for the new front page. The site is using Wordpress so having some familiarity with that would be great. If your not familiar, but have a interest, let me know I can give you some links to help you get up to speed.

BYOY - build your own yurt

Bored?  Time to kill? some Bent-wood lying around?  Build a Yurt.

A friend of mine was taking his boys camping.  He was looking at a state campground that offered Yurt rentals.  I had no idea what a Yurt was.  I mean I have heard of them before but didn’t know their origin.  While searching for that info I found a place that sells instructions on how to build your own.
