Haven't tried these myself (yet) but thought I'd share in case anyone was prepping for a campout and wanted to do something different. The costs of these dried goods on Amazon seems to be a lot until you break it down by meal and how much alternatives cost. I personally don't plan on investing in a dehydrator at this point in time.

Thanks, bookmarked it. I have been on the fence about getting a dehydrator for some time. I am torn between the desire to make meals that are easy and nourishing and my history of a complete lack of prep before trips.....often hitting the store the night before or even the same day I leave.

I also want to start backpacking at some point and it seems like a no brainer for backpacking.

      i dont use a dehydrator
      i use my oven(gas oven)
i set it to lowest setting, getting underneath to check just enough for it to stay on,
have heard can do it with just pilot light but never tried it with just the pilot light, and my recent stove is electric start
and i keep the oven door cracked open about 1"-2"
things i dehydrate in the oven
      Beef jerky,
sauce, either left over sauce or remains of tomato paste, i spread it out on parchment paper, flip it over 3-4 hrs later, then peel it out and grind it into a powder
      fruits, and veggies
i try not to dehydrate complete meals, instead dehydrate ingredients for meals
i then add those ingredients to pasta, cornmeal or rice
i also dehydrated turkey jerky, but turkey/chicken does not last very long even when dehydrated. just too much moisture in it

I make a lot of instant meals. I don’t have a dehydrator, I buy most of my food from Packit Gourmet. http://www.packitgourmet.com/ in most foods we like freeze dried. We like Karen’s Naturals also. http://www.shopkarensnaturals.com/ I buy the food and make my own meals to our tastes.

Still have a dehydrator (I think) around somewhere; it hasn't been used much since I stopped backpacking.
Mostly I used it to dehydrate fruit, and some corn, make jerky and occasionally fruit leather.

          Enjoy!

For DD & "civilized" camping; 2003 Ford explorer sport, 4wd; ARB & torsen diffs, 4.10 gears, 32" MTs.
Ground tents work best for me, so far.
Experience along with properly set up 4WD will get you to & through places (on existing, approved 4WD trails) that 4WD, alone, can't get to.

Yum! I've been cutting out the mess by eating these self heating meals from OMEALS.
