Wayne National Forest in Ohio is composed of three geographical areas - Marietta, Athens/Nelsonville, and Ironton. This is about the Marietta area in Southeastern Ohio off Interstate 77 at the Ohio/West Virginia line.
Fracking is a concern to those of us who use the forest. The Marietta area is composed of 60,000 acres, and 40,000 acres are up for auction. The Keep Wayne Wild Facebook page goes into much detail on this, but it essentially boils down to an attempt to sell off to oil and gas interests for a piece of an ultimate route that will go from oil areas in Pennsylvania & Ohio with that oil piped under the Ohio River to the Ashland area Marathon refinery in Kentucky.
Groups across the state have banded together to protest this planned sell off. This area is a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors.
One can camp at WNF in developed and semi-developed areas very economically. Even with the proposed changes for 2018, it is still an inexpensive place to camp.
Proposed changes - Leith Run Campground in New Matamoras would decrease from $21 to $20 for sites with electrical hookups and tent-only non-electric sites would remain at $15. Burr Oak Cove Campground would see an increase from $10 to $15 for non-electric sites. Tent-only sites at Burr Oak Cove will remain unchanged at $10. When water is not available fees will remain at $10.
The proposal also includes a new fee of $10 for campgrounds along Ohio 26 in Washington and Monroe counties, which include Hune Bridge, Lane Farm, Ring Mill and Lamping Homestead campgrounds.
For those who like to go off-road , the horse and mountain bike fees will be eliminated. (Currently, $12 daily, $24 three day permit, $45 annual permit).
