Re: Where do you draw the line?

I am a firm believer in tarps! I sat out under a tarp one night and enjoyed some good coffee while watching a strong thunderstorm. I finally decided to go to bed and discovered my rainfly had leaked and my sleeping bag and all my clothes were soaked. Since then, I set up my tent, install the rainfly, and then cover everything with a tarp. I haven't had a leak in the tent since.

Almage mountain/baldy near Pike's Peak (better, except for the trash which will mostly be hidden by snow) between 9,000 feet and tree line, highs near 20F lows in the teens over this weekend, likely need a substantial 4x4 and mud tires/chains/both, winch & shovels (and likely a chainsaw; to clear the trail of trees brought down by those winds) to get far in/out due to snow (relatively few people can do it this time of year)....

        Enjoy!

Re: Where do you draw the line?

In the past, early fall was pretty much THE END of my camping season. Prolly a combination of working schedule and local weather. Now that semi retirement has hit I'm really entranced with the idea of winter camping . In the snow. Needing X skis or snowshoes to get around.
          Ain't a good fantasy awesome?
          2017:

July 3 to July 16- annual kiddo trip
Aug 2 to Aug 14- adult trip to recover from kiddos' outing. Bring on the Campari!

... and the best parts of reality can be pretty close... I say go for it but be prepared.

(the downsides can, sometimes, be pretty down).

Overall, my blood has gotten too thin, and I am getting too old for some of the rigors, to do winter camping anymore...

                Enjoy!

IF I do this pretty sure it'll be w/o the man. He still hasn't gotten over the horrors of camping in his "Lawng Eyeland" ( Long Island; a 'burb of NYC:D) backyard for one half of a night.....

Right now I'm trying to paint a a rosy coloured pic of camping on an Adirondack water access only, pit toilet island campground complete with black flies. And NO movies night for the kiddos?/!
Ohhhhhhhhhhh the horror of living 30 odd years with an insidious wimman who will have her own way.
                  Eventually.

One of my friends has been threatening to bring movies for a few years (and since he got a generator, he may actually do it)... (I have not told him of laptop powered projectors , on purpose).

The group toilet thing we have figured, for non-rocky areas; (tent, dome or shower, with a hole in the floor + posthole digger + (bottomless)5 gallon bucket W/seat ...cut the bottom off a trash bag put into the bucket, put on seat, insert end of bag into hole; with an accessory shovel to throw a small scoop of dirt in on top to "flush").

...Personally, for short trips; I just bring the porta pot... (should, probably, have gotten one with a larger tank for longer trips).

                    Enjoy!

Literally laughed out loud here. I just got my projector and screen for camping. Not top end, for sure - paid under $100 for the projector, but it's surprisingly bright and sharp enough that our gang of drunks WILL be laughing our butts off to the likes of Monty Python, Mel Brooks and the Airplane series on the next Spring trip. AND, the projector and DVD player draw so little power, it'll easily run off my 300 watt inverter.

Re: Where do you draw the line?

When I started camping again, a friend joined me and brought her sheet, projector, and generator for a movie night. I have to say the entire movie, I sat there watching and waiting for the other campers to come over and complain about the noise (it was one of the honda "quiet generators" but sounded horribly loud to me) and/or the light (the movie image seemed to light up the entire place. I couldn't enjoy the movie at all - it just felt wrong out there in the woods.

I bring a few movies along with my laptop, but so far haven't watched any while camping.

We usually try for about 3 feet but 18" to 2' is more often the case (roots/rocks)...I believe health guidelines typically say 18" but most cat holes are less than a foot.

...Depending on the movies &/ people; movies can kill an otherwise great party...Porn is a surefire party killer/party splitter (not a spectator sport, IMO)...Python (depending on the people) often works, Brooks - less so, haven't tried Airplane series... Based on pizza & movies & beer night, I found developing a consensus of music & BS or movie often results in a choice for music & BS over movie/s (be flexible for best results)...
My biggest objection is that most folks don't know how to make good popcorn over a campfire (especially after beers though Jiffy-pop has resulted in more than a little amusement)... Buttering fry pan popcorn is typically a 2 person (and a large paper grocery bag - team work) operation...

                              Enjoy!

You should be investigated for un-American activities for such a claim! LOL

Believe me - when you've camped with the same people for 30+ years, you get to know who likes what. As much as I like Winter camping, Spring can't get here fast enough. Definitely looking forward to setting up the Theater in the Woods!
