  • Finger Lakes- New York

    Hello!
New to the forum - looks like a great place to be!

We are planning a trip out to Niagara falls and the finger lakes this summer. Our plan is to spend 3 nights camping in the Niagara Falls region and then head over to the finger lakes.

We have 9 nights to spend in the finger lakes and are wondering whether we should plunk ourselves in one place the entire time and do day trips around or should we plan on half the time on one lake and half on another?

We have a small pop-up camper. We are a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 kids ages 14 and 12. We love to hike, bike, and kayak - anything outdoors - looking forward to spending time in this area. Any info would be helpful!
    Thanks!
    Cindy

    Hello and welcome cindyg!

Well believe it or not if you are planning to be in that region for the summer you need to hot foot it over to www.reserveamerica.com ASAP and book your reservations. Certain areas of the NE book as soon as the reservation window opens and you can book 9 months in advance. That means the reservation window has already been open...since October 2015 for June 2016 reservations.

I think this is a great way to go. Easy setup of a permanent base camp and then just load up the kayaks or bikes or feet and roam at will . You'll find lots of parks to visit and I think if you are staying at one park you can park for free at others; got to check on that so will come back to confirm.

OK, guess they changed the parking fee regulations in a perpetual NY State of Mind money grab:D.
However you might find that buying a $65.00 Empire Pass is worth the money if you plan to visit several parks on day trips:

Here is a map of state parks in the Finger Lakes Region

As well you can get a free copy of the NYS Parks book from the tourist board; can also view it online but I prefer the hard copy version when comparing different parks.

      HTH!
