    I have used a thick mil plastic that I cut to size for several years and just this last trip found a couple of tiny holes in it. I also use tarps and have a footprint that came with my Kodiak canvas even though it probably doesn't need it.

      I still use a sliver tarp tucked under so its slightly smaller than the tent floor. Saves the tent floor from a lot of dirt and most damage... have an actual OEM footprint, some where, but its vey light duty and won't give the physical (stone/root) protection.

      For DD & "civilized" camping; 2003 Ford explorer sport, 4wd; ARB & torsen diffs, 4.10 gears, 32" MTs.
      Ground tents work best for me, so far.
      Experience along with properly set up 4WD will get you to & through places (on existing, approved 4WD trails) that 4WD, alone, can't get to.
