  • Bucket light

I finally got around to making my bucket light last weekend.
I had my own design with materials I had been hanging on to for a while.

I was only able to find one YOUTUBE video on it and this web site
    http://campingbucketlights.com/

Mine is different from both of these but the same concept. I used a smaller more opaque bucket. Maybe I can figure out how to post a picture sometime. This should be fun for you James and the other electricians on here. I plan to use it to replace my lantern and my tent light when I camp in campgrounds with electricity. I might as well use the electric I'm paying for rather then my gas or batteries.

I don't understand. Is is just a bucket with a light inside?

Yes it is James. With the bucket it is easy to pack, a good place to store a cord and maybe some other camping stuff, and the bulb will not get busted. It gives a whole lot of light and is waterproof. Like I said if I am camping at a site with electricity, why not use it rather then burn gas in my lantern or batteries in my LED light.

Seems bulky for camping. But if it floats yer boat, go for it! Some good slogans on that website! Love the one that says....
"Retired - goodbye tension, hello pension!"
Got my first pension check this month!
Might need that bucket light for my front deck at home!
Longtime Motorcycle Camper. Getting away from it all on two wheels!

            Re: Bucket light

We took our pop up camping two weekends ago. Life was good the first couple of nights, then, Friday night, we got a neighbor in the site behind us. At the corner of his site, right behind our bunk end, he drove a shepherd's pole in the ground, and hung a bucket light up. Pretty cool light, I thought. I had heard of people making them, but, never seen one. Then, came bed time. That dang light lit up the inside of our camper, through the heavy canvas, like a flood light in a metropolitan area. We had to ask them to turn it off, which caused problems, because they had already turned in for the evening. Please be respectful of any camping neighbors you may have, or, even add a shield to it so as to not intrude on others camping enjoyment.

James - is your signature supposed to read "Rejoice brothers and sisters. Another football season is upon us. MAY the Cardinals rise to new heights and soar over their foes."? I keep reading it and am getting my ANALyst bee in the bonnet wanting to change it. Sorry - just couldn't hold back any more... (I drive my boss crazy correcting everything he writes.)

Good point, David. Campgrounds are turning into a circus. We have people using noisy generators to light up Christmas lights all night long on their camper trailers in July. We have guys with chainsaws cutting down trees and cutting up lumber that they hauled into the campgrounds.

I hate to be a grump, but I wish some of these people would just stay home or camp at a Jellystone.

I was camping at a National Forest campground this weekend with my wife and friends. We all agreed that our own homes were more quiet and secluded than the campground.

Bright light would be a real problem. I once tent camped in a KOA that put me on the back fence line. Next door was a sports stadium. Those stadium lights were on ALL NIGHT! Hated it! :-(

                      Re: Bucket light

I firmly promote the responsible use of bucket lights, lanterns, flash lights, headlamps, car or truck headlights on standard or high beam, and any other light making device while camping around others.
I also ask that folks re frame from music that I can also hear from their radios or car stereos. And another thing, children that do not have a quiet voice from the time the get up to all hours of the evening. And do not use my campsite as a shortcut to anywhere.
                      OK rant over.

Oh, and your dog is your dog I really don't care to see it, pet it or hear it, especially if it chases after me as I walk or ride by on the road.
Now the rant is over (I think)

You forgot generators, putting up of picket fences, chainsaws, out of tune singing, peeing in the campsite, drunken puking at 3 a.m., smoky campfires, and my personal favorite:

If you go to a family campground and you do not have a large group of people and kids to keep you busy, you must absolutely not sit quietly at your campsite without a campfire and not talk to all the obnoxious jerks camping around you. (Read that one on another forum - they actually complained about two separate couples who spent their holiday weekend quietly at their own campsite not bothering another soul. Why did they complain? Because obviously these people are some sort of nuts not to have complained to the other campers about their noise and obnoxiousness...

                              Re: Bucket light

I try to camp in as much darkness as possible. I have green rope lights mounted under my Teardrop. They give a soft glow and you can not see the lights themselves. They allow me to find my trailer in the dark but does not bother other campers or attract bugs like a porch light does. I turn them out when I go to sleep.

But on a trip a few weeks ago I met my first bucket light. The guy had a 24+ ft trailer with a bucket light that must have had a 300 watt bulb in it. He also had lights all along his awning. The site looked like a car dealership. I'm not sure what the purpose of so much light was. They never came out and sat out by a fire or to eat. So why all the light? But maybe they looked out their window and wondered why the dope across the way was sitting in the dark. Just the light of a camp fire.
